Finally got my PC upgraded a decent amount. Upgraded my HP Z400 workstation with 20GB RAM, a 120GB Samsung SSD, a 1TB 7200RPM Seagate hard drive, an ASUSNVidia GTX 750Ti with dual cooling fans, and an Intel Xeon X5660 6-core CPU. I also supplanted my two 16:10 monitors with a central 4:3 to be joined by ANOTHER Dell 4:3 which I have not yet decided on a location for. Been playing TONS of GTA V now that I have a computer that can handle it. And Skyrim on Ultra High settings with the HD texture pack installed. My eyeballs are ‘sploding.

Also, the built-in screen recording feature of Windows 10 has been working really well for me after I changed the key combo to start it. Not much of a drop in frames at “normal” quality, which honestly has quite a bit of compression applied and looks a bit muddy but it’s doable for my shitty let’s plays and clips of silly stuff.

This makes me miss my gaming PC so much...

I’ve spent well over the cost of an Xbox One for this thing, but it was so worth it. Three monitors, a really nice microphone and a set of three way tower speakers, a Logitech G602 mouse, and it does other stuff besides gaming. Yes. Yes pls.

I had a nice one built up from spare parts gathered from here and there, mostly from accepting PC components as payments for services rendered for cash-strapped friends. It was capable of playing Bioshock Infinite, Diablo III, and Battlfield: Hardliness at fully maxed settings and Skyrim at full ultra settings with a few ENB Mods thrown into the mix, all at 60-90FPS.

Then one day the power supply shorted and caught fire, at the time time sending a massive surge which caused one of the ram sticks to suffer a catastrophic short, arcing over to the northside bridge and the southside chipset, frying the CPU and most of the onboard eSATA ports along with the entire circuit board under the RAM modules.

Now I’m on a pieced-together old Dell with an early-generation Intel Quad-Core processor, 4 GB of DDR2 RAM, and a power supply too weak to run any of my graphics cards, leaving me with onboard graphics only. It’s fine for basic surfing and streaming, but gaming is out of the cards for quite a while.

That is a spectacular PSU failure.

Yeah...

Now that I think about it, I can add it to the series of events that have gone sour lately. XD

New list of unfortunate and ironically-timed positive events:

Fiancee’s minivan dies on us -> Chin up and have an awesome Halloween by making our own costumes -> Lose high-paying construction job -> Get approved for free mental health care and begin treatment regimen -> get okay-paying job with refurbishing company -> Computer catches fire -> Build workable computer from scrap parts -> Dryer dies -> Take apart dryer to find heating element coil is in 3 pieces and bearing housing is just a mass of plastic ground down back to pure carbon -> String up 50+feet of hanging line to line-dry laundry around house and property -> Refurbishing company goes bankrupt, firing me a week before Christmas -> Day after Christmas, Get minimum wage job as a pizza delivery driver with management training scheduled -> Get approved to switch medication from Seroquel to Adderall -> Order new brakes to prepare for wear and tear from delivery job -> Day after first shift as a delivery driver, clutch goes out on Mini -> Manager is cool and works with me on getting me in-store shifts when I can get a ride, expedites management training -> After 2 slave cylinders and a master cylinder, find out throwout bearing is bad (exploded, actually) -> New brakes show up at my door -> Get Mini on a friend’s lift and disassembled -> Some friends help me cover bills and pay for new clutch assembly parts -> Garage door falls on me -> Fix garage door -> Get denied unemployment for the week of Christmas because I found another job too soon -> New clutch assembly arrives looking like it was shipped through time from August 15th, 1945 Nagasaki -> Replacement clutch assembly claim approved -> Kitchen sink develops massive leak -> Fix dryer and begin catching up on backlog of laundry -> Kitchen sink gets fixed -> Microwave dies -> Fiancee buys me strawberry sparkling water because she knows me so well

That’s a sweet setup. I’ll probably go that route when I upgrade the current rig. How are the 3 monitors wired in?

Two of them are DVI, the far right one is VGA. Going to add a fourth via HDMI later today

16:10 dominates 16:9, whether it’s a 1920x1200 24" or 2560x1600 30".

There was a Mushkin 1tb SSD deal listed on Slickdeals.net recently. 230-240 on Amazon I think, but 190-200 on Jet with a coupon code. Being entirely solid state is awesome, especially because when your gpu isn't cranking your PC goes silent.
